Performance and Appraisals

Performance … what is it and how do we address it at our university?
While that may seem like an easy question with a common-sense answer,
it isn’t as simple as saying “well done” or “great job,” nor is it
“you missed the mark here” or “next time do this instead.”
  • Performance is a broad umbrella covering the vision that guides us, the work that gets us to our outcomes, and the way in which we interact with our partners, peers, and personnel.

  • While performance management is ongoing: a regular cadence of check-ins, conversations, and monitoring, the appraisal captures the overall performance and outcomes of a given period. The appraisal gives managers the opportunity to formally praise, coach, support, and establish goals that are in alignment with the department and campus strategic plan.

  • Both are important, both provide value, and both must be completed with regularity. Both take consideration, conversation, and commitment to regularly connecting with your leader or your direct reports.
