Employment Frequently Asked Questions for Applicants

How do I create an account to apply for a job?
Click here to create an account in PAWS. Type in your name, email and password you would like to use. Anyone with an existing UC Merced account does not need to register, but may log in using their UCMNetID and password.

How do I create a job application using PAWS?
Go to the PAWS Log In by clicking here.  After setting up your User Name and Password (if necessary), follow these steps:

1.       Find a job by viewing our list of open positions.

2.       Create a profile, or if you already have one, make sure your online profile is up-to-date and current.

3.       Answer some application-specific questions, attach a cover letter, resume, and any other documentation required to submit an application.

4.       Complete each page of the application.

Your online profile will be used for each application you submit. Your account and application information will be saved in PAWS. However, you must submit a Cover Letter, Resume and any other required documents for each individual position you apply for.

How do I apply for a position at UC Merced if I don’t have access to a computer or the internet?
Your local library may provide free internet access for you to complete your application. The Merced Library is located at 2100 O St, Merced, CA 95340. Their phone number is (209) 385-7643.  Information for all other Merced County Library Branches can be found at

In order to apply for a position online at UC Merced, you will need to obtain a free email address from a service provider such as,, or Gmail. There are many free email providers on the Internet.

How do I edit my job application?
Log in to PAWS with your user ID and password.

Under Profiles click on ‘Edit’.

You can navigate between categories of your application. Be sure to click ‘Save and Continue’ at the bottom of each category to save your updated information.

How do I search job postings?
View Staff Job Postings in PAWS

You can view postings under Academic, Staff, Students, and Courtesy (courtesy listings are from other institutions).

The navigation links will take you to a listing of current positions.

How do I check the status of my application?
Log in to PAWS with your user ID and password. All of the applications which you have submitted will be displayed. Check the Status column to see the status of each position you have applied for. The posting status will appear as Open, Closed, Filled, or Extended.

How can I get my foot in the door at UC Merced if I haven’t been selected for one of their career positions?
UC Merced offers limited positions. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply for any of the limited, continuous recruitment positions offered. Click here to view the Continuous Recruitment positions.

Is there an average amount of time between applying for a position and hearing back from the University?
Review of applications may take anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks, or more, depending on the department needs.

Is it recommended to contact the University to check on my application?
You can check the status of your application by viewing your profile in PAWS.  You can contact Human Resources for an update on any Staff position by calling 209-228-8247.  Please have the position number available.  Please note that it may take anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks for the review of applications.
