Become a Volunteer Instructor

Volunteer instructors are integral to the success of both programs. Volunteer instructors are subject-matter experts who donate their time leading courses, workshops and training sessions during fall, spring, and summer semesters. 

Becoming a volunteer instructor is a great way build your resume, network, and support staff members’ goals of improving their knowledge and/or career skills.  Instructors are expected to plan, organize, and teach in a manner that fosters healthy living, working, and learning environments that promote UC Merced’s mission and Principles of Community. 

We assist instructors in maintaining these practices through syllabus consultation and semester-long support. The Talent Development team will help you to:

  • Construct your syllabus and/or course plan
  • Review and provide guidance on the creation of session outcomes
  • Reserve classrooms
  • Enter class in the UC Learning Center and provide access to instructor
  • Provide/collaborate training materials
  • Send out announcements
  • Provide attendance roster
  • Provide evaluation forms

Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in the subject matter area OR
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution AND a certification in the specific subject matter area.
  • Minimum one year teaching experience in the subject matter area is preferred; However, new instructors are welcomed.
  • Passion for working with staff members to improve their knowledge or career skills.
  • Instructors must have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the UC Merced community.
  • Develop an instructional plan (known as a course outline or syllabus) for the course(s) they teach and ensure that it meets UC Merced’s mission, Principles of Community, and fosters healthy living, working, and learning environments.
